| The Rhein was a 453' long
German freighter operated by the Hamburg American Line. When World War
II began, the Rhein attempted to return to Germany. Unfortunately,
she was trapped near the Dry Tortugas by the Dutch and British warships
Van Kinsbergen and Caradoc. Instead of surrendering, the crew of the
Rhein attempted to scuttle their vessel before the British Caradoc
sent her to the bottom with her deck guns. The ship now lies
upright in 250 fsw north of the Tortugas. |
